With the blessing of Metropolitan of Alaverdi David, and through his tireless efforts, in 2002-2005, a new copy of the monastery’s protector, the Khakhuli Icon of the Most Holy Virgin, was painted, deposited in a new casing, adorned with precious stones, and, in line with ancient Christian tradition, kept for forty days next to the original at the Georgian Museum of Art. On September 7(20), 2005, forefeast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, the icon was placed in the renewed New Shuamta monastery dedicated to Her.
Similar to the original, the new icon also has 44 holy relics on its back, though unlike the original, this time a list identifying these relics is available:
